Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
I am most passionate about:
What specific issue(s) are you working to address, and what motivates you to do so?<br />
All of my work is motivated by the practice of active hope. Active hope, as explored by Joanna Macy, is the idea that even amid global challenges, it is possible to foster hope through action. For me, having active hope means being driven to make a meaningful impact in my community, supported by diverse relationships and experiences. Whether through academic pursuits, community-based projects, or international collaborations, I am driven by active hope which has motivated me to develop skills and knowledge to bridge gaps between diverse groups, foster intercultural dialogue, and champion social change.
I am deeply committed to education. As a program assistant and sessional instructor for the Universidad de Oriente-University of Alberta Cuba Study Abroad Program over the last 8 years, I have sought to facilitate transformative learning experiences for students from both Cuba and Canada, enabling community service-learning opportunities and immersive educational exchanges. I support students in gaining practical, global insights and encourage them to develop a critical understanding of international issues through collaborative, hands-on learning. In this role, I have also had the opportunity to build lasting relationships with local organizations such as the Cuban Institute of Friendship, the Saíz Brothers Association, Casa del Caribe, La Casa de Las Tradiciones, among others. Through these collaborations, I have worked to bridge the gap between global solidarity and local realities to build capacity for international cooperation. This is work I will continue building upon as I pursue my PhD in Political Science at the U of A with a focus on Cuba, international political economy, and migration.
Similarly, in my work as a research associate for the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy, I have made significant contributions to projects related to evaluating and understanding education systems and policy in Alberta and across Canada. In light of increasing classroom complexity and widespread teacher shortages, it is essential to build a strong education system that supports the needs of educators and students.
Being involved in community-driven projects and local initiatives is another way I have sought to contribute to social change. I am a passionate advocate for gender equality, social justice, and the rights of marginalized communities. At the U of A and Carleton University, I have driven initiatives advocating for 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion, anti-racism, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) programs and policy development. As a volunteer with the Laurier Heights Community League, I have supported the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign, raising funds to support the work of organizations such as the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton, and contributing to awareness and education. Additionally, as the marketing lead for the Global Shapers Edmonton Hub, I have contributed to projects with a focus on areas related to inclusion, skills, health, aid, the planet, and engagement. I also teach yoga with the Canucks Autism Network, creating accessible and inclusive yoga spaces for neurodiverse individuals.
Overall, my commitment to active hope drives me to engage in diverse, meaningful work across education, research, community advocacy, and international cooperation, all aimed at fostering social change and addressing global and local challenges.
What is your foundation?
From a young age, I was involved in my neighbourhood and school settings, which was heavily encouraged by my family who have been active community builders for many years. I further developed this drive during my undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus, when I began to expand my horizons and learn more about international realities through my specialization in Global and Development Studies. The most pivotal experience of this program was studying abroad in Santiago de Cuba. During this program, I met Dr. Sandra Rein, an inspiring international relations professor, who has remained my closest mentor and supporter throughout my academic career. My experiences working with Sandra have shaped my journey in every way, from my decision to pursue a Masters degree in International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa to my current PhD in Political Science at the U of A. Sandra also inspired me to say ‘yes’ to many other opportunities, such as taking on leadership roles for community organizations in Camrose (Augustana Campus), advocating for students, and pursuing rigorous research. These experiences have allowed me to engage with diverse perspectives and encouraged me to seek out chances to learn from others, especially in intercultural contexts.
As a burgeoning political scientist, I am acutely aware of the immense challenges the world is facing which are depressing and overwhelming at times. However, continuing to be an active member of my community and making a positive impact even at the local or micro-level motivates me to have active hope that we can build an equitable, sustainable, and just future.
WHat is your vision for the future?
I aspire to be an educator, activist, and academic guided by anti-racist, decolonial, and feminist frameworks. Through these efforts, my vision for the future is tied to three interconnected elements. First, I envision a world where we can find common ground through empathy and meaningful relationships that enable us to have dialogue even in times of political polarization and tension. I believe relationships are at the heart of social change. Building on this, I see a future where we can create brave spaces for collaborative learning so that individuals and communities are empowered to share lived experiences across generations and perspectives. We must rediscover the art of listening and relating to each other, and I believe education and academia are two key ways we can foster these interactions. Third, I envision a future where systems of oppression and inequality are dismantled, giving rise to equity and justice. In my work, I aim to use my privilege as a queer white woman to amplify the voices of marginalized groups by ‘passing the mic’. Given the scope of current global complexities, I believe these are some of the many important aspects that will help us to build a society that supports future generations and the health of the planet and people. Ultimately, we need each other – we must foster strong and supportive communities to address the most pressing issues we face domestically and internationally.
