I am most passionate about:
What specific issue(s) are you working to address, and what motivates you to do so?
As a Student-at-Law, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to address systemic barriers and injustices faced by vulnerable and marginalized communities, particularly refugees, asylum seekers, and women affected by gender-based violence. My focus on trauma-informed lawyering and ensuring procedural fairness reflects my commitment to upholding dignity, respect, and equitable treatment for those I have the privilege to advocate for. I am especially driven by the need to champion the best interests of children, support family reunification, and centre humanitarian considerations in my work.
Advocating for my community, both locally and globally, is an essential part of who I am. Through my experience supporting water well projects with Islamic Relief Canada, I have witnessed how something as fundamental as access to clean and safe water transforms lives. For women and girls, who often shoulder the burden of water collection, it creates opportunities to pursue education, contribute economically, and break free from cycles of inequity. These experiences have taught me that well-being is multidimensional and must address the intersection of basic needs, empowerment, and dignity.
I am equally passionate about making spaces more inclusive. Through my involvement with the Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association, I strive to support individuals navigating the legal profession while remaining true to their faiths and cultures. This work reflects my belief in breaking down systemic barriers and fostering equity. My recent research position at the Legal Centre for Palestine has further deepened my understanding of global justice and the need for solidarity in the critical fight for human rights. Similarly, my collaboration with Équijustice in their restorative justice program for youth has been an incredibly meaningful experience, highlighting the importance of empathy and healing in fostering accountability and rebuilding lives.
Looking back, I am deeply thankful for the opportunities I have had to contribute to meaningful work, including advocating for an anti-Islamophobia strategy in Alberta with the National Council of Canadian Muslims and creating a resource to streamline human rights complaint processes for their legal department. These efforts were rooted in a desire to improve access and build tools to serve our community better. Similarly, the scholarship fund I established reflects my commitment to creating opportunities for underprivileged students, recognizing education as a pathway to empowerment and transformation.
All these experiences—whether advocating for human rights, supporting access to essential resources, or creating inclusive spaces—are tied together by my desire to foster resilience, promote justice, and empower our community. I am inspired by the strength of the people I work with and remain committed to building a future that is more equitable, inclusive, and compassionate for all.
What is your foundation?
My foundation is rooted in my faith, family, and community. Being Muslim has taught me the importance of living life as someone who strives to leave the world better than they found it. Islam’s emphasis on compassion, justice, and empowerment inspires me to navigate life with sincerity, patience, and a sense of responsibility to serve others.
At the heart of my journey is my incredible mother—a woman of extraordinary strength, wisdom, and compassion. She inspires me every day with her unwavering resilience and patience. My younger brother’s inspiring ability to remain grounded and hopeful in the face of difficulties motivates me to carry these values forward in all I do.
My father, though no longer with us, remains a guiding light in my life. He was a man committed to justice and making the world a better place, a mission he pursued until the day his life was tragically taken. His legacy of compassion and service continues to inspire me to carry forward his work. My husband, my partner and one of my greatest supporters, helps me stay rooted while encouraging me to embrace my faith and aspirations with courage and integrity.
I am also deeply grateful for my principal and mentor, Jouman El-Asmar, an extraordinary lawyer and advocate who strives for justice and compassion in every endeavour. My community—diverse, steadfast, and inspiring—has allowed me to stand on the shoulders of giants, grounding me in the strength of collective wisdom and shared purpose.
These relationships and my faith have instilled in me a profound sense of purpose. I am reminded that true success lies in embodying compassion, justice, and patience, and in uplifting and serving others.
What is your vision for the future?
In the future, I see myself continuing to do what I can to help people navigate systems that weren’t built with them in mind. My role is to create paths where none exist and, where they do exist, to make them easier for others to tread on. This work has taught me patience, perseverance, and the importance of faith in God’s plan.
I’m grateful for the challenges I’ve faced, as they’ve deepened my resilience and empathy, allowing me to better support others through their struggles. I remind myself that even small steps matter and that the impact of this work might not always be visible right away. I just want to do my part, trusting that these efforts will grow into something beautiful, like planting seeds I know will bloom—even if I’m not there to see the flowers
